El Salvador

El Salvador is a real rarity on this blog and as much as I would love to serve you guys some more background information, I simply lack the time and nerves to do so at the moment. Alas, we shall stick to the tasting today.

Plantation El Salvador 2015 8YO “Pineau des Charantes Cask” (48,6%): The jury is still out on Pineau des Charantes as far as my palate is concerned but it is certainly a product I am quite interested in and this Rum isn’t any different, at first glance, but let’s see. Nose: Huh? What is going on here? I am having a hard time detecting a lot of aromas. Sure, there are fruits and grapes, but frankly, this one doesn’t offer a lot. Palate: Just like with the nose, I don’t get much. Some grapes, quite a bit of cinnamon, vanilla yoghurt and some oak but that’s about it. It kinda reminds me a bit of Amburana wood matured Cachaca but I think I’d prefer the Cachaca every day. Finish: An extension of the palate, but there’s an additional note that is really hard to pin down. Passion fruit I guess. Well, this isn’t a product the world has been waiting for, I think. There’s absolutely nothing bad about it, but I am really questioning its purpose. (60/100)

Rom Deluxe El Salvador 2007 12YO (65,9%): This is Rom Deluxe’s 10th bottling, which shows that they have been around for a very long time already. Chapeau! Nose: Not that different from the Plantation actually. I get mostly grapes, some passion fruit and clearly soapy notes, which almost blend in with more floral nuances. I am still not sure what this is all about. Palate: Full force and much heavier than the extremely light nose suggested. The profile includes grapes, grounded cinnamon and cumin (think English curry I guess), as well as black tea leafs. Finish: Medium long with orange, cloves perhaps and still plenty of cumin. Once again, this isn’t terrible at all, but it doesn’t convince me in any way whatsoever. (68/100)
